Why IBM’s Agentic AI Strategy Matters

It did not escape me that this week I am posting an IBM update on a blog called The Microsoft Cloud Blog. That is the joy of working in the Microsoft Practice while also being part of IBM. Every so often the two worlds meet in interesting ways. This announcement from IBM felt like one of those moments, so it seemed right to share it here, especially given how many of the conversations I have with clients sit squarely at the intersection of these ecosystems.

IBM’s move to formalise support for agentic AI within the enterprise space feels like a natural step in the broader maturity of this field. Many organisations have spent years experimenting in pockets, trying out small pilots or building chat based tools without a consistent framework behind them. Bringing structure, guidance and clearer guardrails to this activity should help teams approach AI in a more confident and intentional way.

What stands out in the announcement is the recognition that there is still a gap between ambition and day to day operational reality. Almost everyone sees the potential of advanced AI agents, yet many are still working through the practical considerations of governance, data access and integration. It feels encouraging to see a major provider leaning into this challenge and offering models that support both innovation and responsible scale.

The interesting question is how quickly organisations can turn this kind of structured support into meaningful progress. Will clearer guidance help teams move from experiments to dependable solutions that deliver value, or will some continue to find the move from idea to implementation a slow journey. There is no single path, but it is encouraging to see the ecosystem move toward more predictable foundations.

Curious to hear how others have approached that transition from early interest in AI to something that genuinely supports the business.
